Extra Curricular Music
In
addition to the school curriculum, children may participate in one
of the school music ensembles. These groups provide students with a
wonderful opportunity to make music with their friends, to learn to
play in a group situation and to extend their appreciation of music.
The groups love to perform for an audience and are given as many
opportunities as possible to perform at school assemblies, school
functions and also in the community. Belonging to a group is a great
motivator and probably the main reason for the strength of
instrumental music at our school. All children enrolled in the music
program have a private music lesson each week with a specialist
tutor in addition to their group rehearsal. Students who have
private tuition outside the school are also welcome to join an
ensemble. Most rehearsals and private lessons are held before and
after school on the school premises.
Current ensembles include:
Strings – beginner, junior, intermediate and senior string groups
plus an orchestra
Bands
– training band, concert band and jazz ensemble
Recorders – beginner, intermediate and senior groups
Guitar group – beginner and guitar ensemble
Rock group – a new venture being trialled for senior students this year
Instrument Hire
Instruments may be hired from the Music Committee. First year
learners are given preference in the hiring of instruments. This
gives beginners the opportunity to find out whether they enjoy their
chosen instrument without the expense of having to purchase their
own instrument immediately. Instrument hire may be possible for
second or even third year learners, depending on availability.
Tuition Available
Qualified music tutors are employed by the music committee to
provide private music lessons on a variety of instruments for
students participating in any of the school music ensembles.
Students generally have a half hour lesson (20mins for recorders)
once a week in addition to their weekly group rehearsal. For various
reasons instrumental tuition begins at different ages on different
instruments. Wind and brass instruments are generally started later
than string instruments and recorders because the lungs need to be
quite well developed in order to be able to play them. It is not
recommended that children learn a musical instrument while they are
in kindergarten. This is a very tiring year and experience has
shown that most children have enough to do learning to cope with the
new school situation. From
Year 1 children may commence recorder, violin or cello lessons (many
small sizes available).
From Year 3 they
may commence a wind, brass or percussion instrument or guitar (half
sizes available), Some may choose to start a string instrument
(violin or cello) in Year 3 and if numbers permit a Year 3 beginners
class will be run.
Music Uniforms
The black and white LCPS music uniforms are only used by the larger
ensembles (Training Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and Orchestra)
for most performances outside the school. The uniform consists of a
black music vest (which is supplied) and long black pants which you
need to purchase. The rest (black socks, black shoes and white short
or long sleeved LCPS polo shirts) are all part of the LCPS school
uniform so everyone should have them.
